How to create the perfect Christmas tree with John Lewis Cambridge

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at The Essex Barn thanks to the Home Design Team from the Cambridge branch of John Lewis who created a stunning Christmas tree for us using this year’s ‘enchanted’ theme. I just love the shimmering gold and silver highlights which really sparkle in our rustic 17th century barn!

Incidentally, did you know that most John Lewis branches have a Home Design Service? And that you can book an appointment with one of their Home Design advisors to help you bring out the very best in your home whether you need some key ideas for one room, or a whole new interior scheme?

Sandra McCall from the Home Design Team John Lewis Cambridge at TheEssexBarn.com

As I’ve written before, our family history with John Lewis goes back for decades so I was delighted to get the chance to work with the Home Design Team from our local branch in Cambridge to bring a fresh and creative perspective to Christmas at The Barn. Sandra McCall, our advisor, worked closely with me every step of the way to create a look that’s both practical and unique – the perfect look for our first Christmas at our new home!

In this, the first of three posts, I’m sharing the stunning Christmas Tree design that Sandra and her team created using the ‘Enchantment’ theme. Coming soon I’ll also be showing you how they styled our large brick fireplace and transformed our 12-seater dining table (created from the mezzanine we removed in the Summer) into a space fit for a festive banquet.

A consultation at The Essex Barn

The first stage of any project with the Home Design Team is a consultation and Sandra visited me at The Barn to get a real feel for the space and a thorough understanding of our lifestyle, preferences, tastes and budget. I then visited the Cambridge branch myself to see the stunning Christmas themes for this year (you can see my video of them here) and fell in love with the ‘Midwinter’ theme but Sandra advised me to pick a second theme that we could use as a contrast. She then created some mood boards that showcased the themes and gave me a idea of how they could work for us. Great advice!

Interestingly, when I was in-store my favourite theme had been ‘Midwinter’ with it’s twist on a very traditional look but after this presentation from Sandra I become a firm ‘Enchantment’ fan. It makes such a  difference to see lots of elements from across departments – crockery, textiles, lighting, rugs – pulled together into one cohesive look.

On the morning of our shoot Sandra and Genevieve arrived at The Barn laden with a stunning tree and lots of goodies and set to work creating the perfect tree.

Getting ready for the shoot at TheEssexBarn.com

And here’s the result…

Isn’t it just stunning? Here are Sandra’s top tips to help you create a similar look in your home:

☆ Use plenty of fairy lights to dress the branches of your tree, the more the better (our tree used 4 separate light strands).

☆ Hang mirrored and glitter baubles on the inner branches of the tree to reflect the light.

☆ Select Feature Baubles and purchase in groups of 3 or 5 of each, this enables you to dress the tree in a zig-zag formation.

☆ Hang Feature decorations – like Michelle’s favourite clock – on focal areas of the tree.

☆ Showcase a spectacular tree topper.

And here are some of my favourite pieces from this look – including the clock which I LOVE – which do you like the best?

I have to say a huge thank you to Sandra and the Home Design Team from John Lewis Cambridge for such a fun and festive day! Want to see more of our Christmas shoot? That is so beautiful I may cry! I’d love to be one of those ‘perfect Christmas tree’ people, but I’m not! I throw tinsel at it and then go a bit nuts with the decorations and bam, it’s done! I really enjoy doing it, but it does look like a child put it together…! lol!

What a gorgeous tree, I love the clock too, it’s so whimsical. The champagne bauble is beautiful too but actually I love them all. Now why did I not know about this service, I virtually live in my local John Lewis, how could I have missed this? Your tree has set the bar high for the rest of the house now, I can’t wait to see what you do xx

This is so STUNNING! I love the color scheme of the ornaments. They complimented the tree very well. It honestly looks like it came out of the enchanted forest. I don’t know about you, but I’ll have a hard time putting the tree away after the Christmas…it’s truly so so pretty!

Can’t wait for the rest of series! Thanks for sharing this with us, Michelle and for hosting us this week on #Sharethejoy. This was a beautiful way to start the week!

Lovely tree. I love those decorations. I was really worried about putting up my fabulous tree and favourite decorations with a toddler around but luckily I have managed to teach her that the decorations stay on the tree so I could still have a fab tree!! Simple pleasures #sharethejoy

What a wonderful and fitting collaboration between the Essex Barn and John Lewis – it makes me want to turn on the Christmas music right away! We’ll be getting our tree this week, and those enchantment swirl baubles have really caught my eye. Wonderful post!

I absolutely can’t deny its beautiful, but where’s the history? My tree is bonkers and covered in things I’ve collected over the years. But I guess that’s just my style. If this is yours then this is a fantastic way to go 🙂 Thanks for hosting #sharethejoy

I do love the history of family baubles too – so I’ve got a second tree in the parlour which is a complete mish-mash of all of them including the ones that the children have made over the years. But it’s nice to have a theme in The Barn and yup this is definitely my style! *sparkles* Thanks for visiting Lisa x

This tree is just stunningly beautiful. I didn’t know about the home design service. We’re big John Lewis and Waitrose fans, I used to be really sad that it was always a trek for us to get to John Lewis, but now they deliver next day to Waitrose, it’s just amazing. So easy. I’m going to watch the video now. Beautiful post, and we really must come and visit at some point, the Barn is looking gorgeous xxx

Thanks Jacqui! It took quite a while actually and Sandra used four separate strands of John Lewis soft white LED lights to get this effect which I agree is stunning. Glad you liked it 🙂
